A fantastic dive spot for beginners and advanced divers, this limestone reef can be entered via a jetty just behind the Aquarium of Western Australia. Explore the bewildering coral maze to view a multitude of fish and reef life, and gape at some of the most beautiful corals in the world.
HMAS Swan
A few short hours’ drive south of Perth will bring you to one of the Southern Hemisphere’s biggest shipwrecks. The HMAS Swan served as a destroyer escort for the Royal Australian Navy until 1997 when it was scuttled to become an artificial reef and popular dive spot. Holes cut into its hull allow divers and marine life to easily access the sunken ship’s interior, making for an incredible underwater adventure. The wreck boasts over 100 species of tropical fish, and vibrantly coloured sponges festoon the walls and decks. If you are lucky, you might even meet the hammerhead sharks who prowl the upper decks but don’t worry, they aren’t hungry since they have had their fill of fish! A Grade A dive site to be sure!
Rottnest Island
Lying just off the coast of Perth City, the island features a wealth of quiet coves, ghostly shipwrecks, shadowy limestone caverns, and splendid reefs around its shores. The warm water is home to a plethora of colourful fish species, and one can meet playful seals who like to frolic in the many coves. Best of all are the 13 shipwrecks that circle the island, the eldest of which dates back to 1842!
