McLaren, renowned for its boundary-pushing performance machines, has again raised the bar by introducing the W1. This latest addition to the iconic 1 series lineup is a plug-in hybrid hypercar with an astonishing 1258 horsepower, making it the most powerful McLaren ever produced.
Performance and Technology
The W1 is a testament to McLaren’s engineering prowess, incorporating technology derived from its Formula 1 racing program. Its active aerodynamic elements, including a rear wing that extends by 11.8 inches, contribute to a claimed 2205 pounds of downforce. A Race drive mode further enhances performance, lowering the suspension and optimizing handling for track-focused driving.
Plug-In Hybrid Powertrain
Under the hood, the W1 features a new twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 engine, producing 916 horsepower on its own. Coupled with a 342-hp electric motor, the combined output reaches 1258 horsepower and 988 pound-feet of torque. This power is transmitted to the rear wheels through an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
McLaren claims the W1 can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in as little as 2.7 seconds and reach a top speed of over 217 mph. The small 1.4-kWh battery provides a limited electric-only range but is primarily focused on enhancing acceleration performance.
Lightweight Construction and Advanced Chassis
The extensive use of carbon fibre throughout the W1’s construction contributes to its lightweight design. The Race Active Chassis Control III system offers three driving modes: Comfort, Sport, and Race, each with varying levels of suspension stiffness and steering feel.
Additional weight-saving measures include titanium suspension bars, 3-D-printed uprights, and a rear suspension heave bar with active links. The W1 also features 15.4-inch carbon-ceramic brake rotors and standard Pirelli P Zero R tyres, with the option for stickier Trofeo RS rubber.
Track-Focused Capabilities
While the W1 is a road-going hypercar, it has been designed with racing in mind. McLaren claims it has lapped its Nardo reference circuit three seconds faster than the Senna, the company’s previous lightweight supercar.
Race mode offers two powertrain settings: GP and Sprint. GP mode provides consistent performance for extended periods, while Sprint mode delivers maximum power for a single lap, ideal for qualifying. The W1’s racing-inspired steering wheel includes buttons for temporary acceleration boosts and drag reduction.
Interior and Customization
The two-seat cockpit of the W1 is designed for performance and features fixed seats with adjustable pedals. Lightweight InnoKnit upholstery covers the interior surfaces and can be customized through McLaren’s MSO personalization program.
An 8.0-inch touchscreen provides Apple CarPlay connectivity, USB ports, and a Bowers & Wilkins stereo system. The luggage compartment can accommodate two-weekend bags or racing helmets.
Price and Availability
The McLaren W1 is a highly exclusive vehicle with a base price starting at $2.1 million. Customization options through the MSO program will undoubtedly increase the final cost. Given its limited production of 399 units, the W1 is expected to be highly sought after by automotive enthusiasts and collectors.
